Liverpool make a welcome return to Anfield after over a month on the road on Wednesday night as, in the midst of a title campaign, they play host to relegation-embattled Sunderland who are without an Anfield win since 1983. Successive away trips to Southampton, Manchester United, and Cardiff constituted a potentially tricky March for the Reds but they’ve taken maximum points and extended their winning run to six matches – their longest run since the ten wins that ended 2008-09. The visitors’ last goal was Fabio Borini’s Wembley opener at the start of March and, either side of the League Cup Final and an FA Cup exit, the Mackams have taken just 4 points from five matches –even a Derby win over North East rivals Newcastle United barely makes up for points lost to Hull City, Crystal Palace, and Norwich City. Title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City both face potentially tricky ties on Tuesday night, home to strugglers Swansea City and away to Manchester United respectively, but Brendan Rodgers will hope to see his side pile the pressure on Chelsea, who they could close to within a point of on Wednesday night and with the sides yet to meet at Anfield. Gus Poyet’s side have games in hand on the sides around them, and supporters would be delighted to see them claim an Anfield scalp as they catch up with the schedule – a Swansea loss and a draw between Hull City and West Ham United would also be welcomed by the Black Cats’ travelling support. A floodlit Anfield will no doubt house an electric atmosphere on Wednesday night – both sets of supporters know that their sides must throw everything on the line in order to satisfy the objectives that remain during the final weeks of the season and will, therefore, do everything they can to empower them.
