Cardiff City Stadium
The journey down to Cardiff is one that Liverpool supporters became very accustomed to between 2001-2006 – the Reds, under Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez made six visits and claimed two FA Cups, a pair of League Cups, and two Community Shields. This Saturday however, Cardiff City host Liverpool for the first time since August 1959. The Bluebirds are 37 points behind their visitors and the sides sit 19th and 2nd, respectively, and are engaged in very different battles. Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s Cardiff secured a crucial victory against fellow-strugglers Fulham two weeks ago but have taken just 4 points from their previous five, and just 7 from ten since the former Manchester United forward took the helm. Brendan Rodgers on the other hand, has proudly guided Liverpool into a title race in just his second season with the Club and the league’s form side have taken maximum points from their previous five. The Reds last recorded five successive league victories at the end of the 2008-09’s title challenge and they last won six successive games at the end of 2005-06, completing a run of nine wins. Cardiff supporters, but for a huge upset by Fulham at Manchester City, are immune from seeing their side return to the foot of the table but the best they can hope for is overtaking Sunderland into 18th – nevertheless, a victory could taken them to within 3 points of as many as seven sides above them. Travelling Liverpool supporters are aware that results last weekend lit up the title race and they are only 2 dropped Manchester City points away from truly sharing the driving seat – City are likely to secure a victory this weekend but one or both of Chelsea and Arsenal are guaranteed to drop points as the challengers meet at Stamford Bridge.
