Liverpool are without a league victory at Old Trafford since 2009’s 4-1 demolition as they head to Manchester on Sunday – there is, nevertheless, cause for great optimism as Manchester United struggle to adapt to life after Alex Ferguson. The hosts sit an unfamiliar 11 points and four league positions adrift of their fierce rivals – the gap hasn’t been so large in Liverpool’s favour since the closing day of the 1990-91 league season, when the sides finished in the positions they occupy now but with a 17 point difference. United have lacked consistency since a fine run of festive form that saw them take four straight league victories – the last five have yielded 8 points and they have just claimed their first successive league victories since late December. Liverpool, on the other hand, sit in 2nd are the league’s form side and there is renewed belief in their title credentials – 13 points have been collected from the last five, as the Reds have scored 16, whilst they are unbeaten in nine league matches since back-to-back defeats at the Etihad and Stamford Bridge before New Year. Manchester United’s recent victories have drawn them close to Spurs in the battle for Europa League qualification – Everton’s games in hand offer them a potential advantage and so building on momentum and claiming three points will be important for David Moyes if he is to avoid ending United’s twenty-four year continental residency. Leaders Chelsea piled the pressure on last weekend and could be 10 points clear by the time Brendan Rodgers’ side kick-off on Sunday – they and Manchester City, who have two games in hand, are firm favourites to win this weekend so it will be crucial that the Reds take the points to stay involved rather than slip into a two-way competition for third with Arsenal. Targets and calculations however, will be forgotten by supporters on Sunday afternoon as these two historic rivals take to the field in a context unfamiliar to the younger generations amongst the respective followings.
