Garry Monk makes his first managerial visit to Anfield this weekend after a mixed, yet encouraging start to life in the Swansea City hot seat. The Swans after today’s results are currently occupying 12th place and sit 25 points behind their Liverpool hosts – themselves in 4th place. The Reds are the league’s form side, maintaining their 11 points from five form with victories against Arsenal and Fulham in the last fortnight. Swansea, on the other hand have taken 7 from their last five – they had only taken 6 points from their previous nine games but Monk remains unbeaten in the league, having beaten Cardiff City in the South Wales derby and secured a respectable draw away in Stoke. Despite a loss against Everton in the FA Cup, a home draw with Napoli is highly respectable –Brendan Rodgers’ side meanwhile, have enjoyed a week off but were eliminated from the Cup in a close game with Arsenal last weekend. There are no easy games this season but with Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea collecting maximum points this weekend –and Everton consequently falling behind, the Reds need to keep pace with teams above them and continue to widen the gap between themselves and the Toffees, as well as putting pressure on Spurs who have the late kick off on Sunday. The bottom half of the table is tight, with only 4 points separating Swansea from Sunderland in 18th. While admittedly the goal difference between the two teams could be described as a chasm, teams have had a habit of having had that figure reduced significantly when visiting Anfield this campaign.
