Sunderland vs Liverpool
Stadium of Light, 16:00 Sunday
Liverpool’s recent downturn in form, compromising three games (in all competitions) without victory, appears somewhat unremarkable when compared to the plight of Sunderland. The Black Cats’ turbulent start to the season has this-week culminated in the dismissal of controversial manager, Paolo Di Canio – bottom of the Premier League, they have taken just a single point from their opening five matches and are without a League win since beating Everton in April. Kevin Ball, former Sunderland Captain, is currently Caretaker Manager (a role which he occupied for ten matches in 2006) and secured a Football League Cup victory against Peterborough United mid-week. Gus Poyet is currently odds-on favourite to be appointed Manager in the coming days and will immediately be tasked with finding goals in the squad with 2013-14 top-scorer Steven Fletcher ruled out for October. For the Reds, who suffered their first defeats of the season (to Southampton and Manchester United) this week, the trip to the North East will be seen as an opportunity to prove that last week was merely a glitch in an otherwise strong start to the season – Luis Suarez’s first Premier League appearance since April will be sure to provide a great boost to spirits.
